Fit Feet on the Street

Date: Sep-16-2020   #In the Community

Fit Feet on the Street is alive and well in Manitoba

During this unprecedented time when social distancing and staying safe within the comforts of home have become our new norm, you might be finding yourself organizing and cleaning a little more than usual. If you are finding that some of your mildly worn or new shoes are gathering dust, we can help find them a much-needed home.

Since 2002, Our Fit Feet on the Street Program has helped put footwear on the feet of Manitoban families who would otherwise not have access to them. It is our mandate to treat all recipients of the footwear with both dignity and respect.

The initiative was inspired by an idea spearheaded by the Two Ten Foundation, which helped give back to the community in a similar fashion across Canada and the United States by providing footwear to individuals and families who lack access to proper shoes. While the Covid-19 pandemic has placed challenges on everyone, some have been impacted more than others – especially those who are marginalized. We wish to support our community in need even if it is on just the soles of their feet during this time with a pair of proper shoes that have been kindly donated by people like you.

Please pass along new and gently worn men’s, women's, and children’s footwear to us. We accept all types of shoes with special focus on all-season athletic footwear, walking shoes, winter boots, and sandals to provide those who don’t have access to proper footwear during the warmest and coldest times of the year.

Proper Shoe Fitting: Kids Edition

Date: Aug-31-2020

“You grew up in the blink of an eye” is a known saying for a reason. It is amazing how quickly little ones go through changes as they grow! When babies are first born, the bones in their feet are still forming, and their feet are mostly made of cartilage. Only about ¾ of the bones even exist at this point! Our feet are not fully formed until we are about 13-18 years of age, but many of the big changes happen in the first 6 years.  During this period of development, the foot can be at risk from injury and deformity due to ill-fitting footwear and great care should be taken with shoe types and shoe fitting.

A fully developed foot has 26 bones, 33 joints and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments in each foot.

We like to say that one good run will lead to another. If you’re starting to run for the first time, welcome to the club! Beginning a training program is exciting and challenging, and your running shoes are a major tool to help you reach your goals. If you’re a seasoned runner, then welcome to the Canadian Footwear club, as well!

Over the coming month, we’re celebrating runners of all levels while providing some fun challenges, giveaways, and insights on the technical side of running shoes, that will keep you comfortable, motivated, and active for months to come.

Do you need a neutral or stability supported shoe? One with plush cushioning or a firmer midsole? Something light and responsive or something durable that will keep you comfortable through long runs? All of these questions – and more – we’ll be answering.

As of late, we have seen a growing number of virtual running formats in the form of apps. These challenges have ranged from 1km time trials to 100-mile events. An app that the Canadian Footwear team swears by and is active on, is Strava!
